A Clinical Observation on 32 Cases of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract
|
|
|
Thirty-two cases of rheumatoid arthritis which were admitted to St. Mary¢¥s Hospital during the past 5 years were analyzed from the standpoint of epidemiology, symptomatology and laboratory findings. The following results were obtained.
1. Classification with diagnostic criteria of The American Rheumatism Association was made as follows:
a. Classical rheumatoid arthritis: 0 case
b. Definite rheumatoid arthritis: 7 cases
c. Probable rheumatoid arthritis: 25 cases
2. Hospital incidence was 0.05% and the highest incidence was in the age groups between 40 to 60 years. Sex ratio of male to female was 1.0:2.6.
3. The frequently involved joints were knee joints (81. 3%) and small joints (62.5%) regardless of sex.
4. The first joints involved were small joints (48. 1%) and knee joints (33.3%).
5. The most common complication was ankylosis.
6. Latex fixation test was positive in 57.1% of 28 cases.
7. 31.5% of the 19 cases showed typical roentgenologic changes especially in female.
8. Six cases (75%) among the synovial biopsy revealed typical histological Changes.
